8 — Layout

A system for every scenario

Alvaria uses two layout systems for branded communications, both print and digital. The systems provide enough flexibility to work in a wide range of scenarios, but enough restraint to make sure that every composition feels on brand.

Edge-to-Edge Layouts

One of Alvaria’s layout system utilizes photography and/or 3D illustration which stretches edge to edge in a layout. That is, there is no padding between the images and the edge of the composition. This is Alvaria’s most basic layout system, and is useful for both on-screen and print applications.

Edge-to-Edge Grid

Layouts with elements that stretch from edge to edge are divided into a 24-section grid. These sections are used to divide the layout into areas for imagery, and blank areas to fill in with content.

Vertical Edge-to-Edge

In a vertical layout, the same 24-section grid can be applied, but it should be applied vertically. The grid should always divide the longest edge of a layout.

Layouts with The Frame

In layouts that do not include edge-to-edge elements, we use The Frame to frame photographs or 3D illustrationswith padding on all sides.

Frame Padding

Padding around the frame should be between 6%-8% of the short edge of the composition. This padding will work for tall or wide compositions of all sizes.

Rounded Rectangle Frames

Images with padding on all sides to not always need to be framed by Alvaria’s proprietary frame shapes. In many cases, a rounded rectangle works well — particularly in Powerpoint decks or Word documents.
