Making connections

Abstractions of Alvaria’s core offering, these graphic tools add texture and visual interest to brand communications in a way unique to Alvaria.

Connector Lines

Intersecting lines, named as “connector lines” in Alvaria’s brand, reinforce connecting with people, and the intersection of technology and humanity. Connector lines are Alvaria’s most basic and most scalable graphic element, and are a go-to device to add texture and visual interest to a layout. Below is a selection of sample intersections between two connector lines.

Connector Line Corner Radius

Connector lines should feel consistent from layout to layout. A big contributor to consistency is appropriately rounded corners. The corner radius should always be roughly between 20%-30% the number of pixels of the short edge of the layout. For instance, in a 1920x1080 px layout, the radius of the corners should be between 216 px and 324 px (20% and 30% of 1080 px, respectively).

Connector Line Weight

Line weight plays a big role in the connector lines’ effectiveness as a visual queue for the Alvaria brand. There is no exact weight that the lines should be at all times, but a good rule of thumb is that they should feel easily visible, but not heavy. In web, the lines are consistently 1.5px. When multiple lines exist as part of the same layout, they should always be the same color.

Connector Line Usage Examples

The following are examples of how the connector lines can be used in a layout, including appropriate corner radius and line weight.

The Frame

Inspired by the connection lines, we developed a variable framing device for images, video, and typography.

Frame Library

To maintain a consistent yet fresh presentation, the frame element can be utilized in a variety of forms.

Resizing the Frame

When resizing a frame to fit your layout, size it up uniformly to its short dimension. Then to size it to its long dimension, grab the necessary vector points and drag them to the desired size. See below for brief clarification.

Uses for the frame

The frame is primarily a holder for photographs. The frame can also be used, either outlines or filled in, to house information or act as a background.

Frame Usage Examples

The following are examples of how the frame can be used in a layout. These frames have been sized to fit their space according to the guidance above.

For more guidance regarding how to use the frame in layout, see section 9.

Compact  Icons

Compact icons are used to visual categorize and distinguish between different points or ideas in a layout. They are intended to accompany blocks of content. They are not intended to be used as a key visual, the way that illustration is.
